It's a bit orange

Perched on a rocky outcrop between Grasse and Vence, Bar-sur-Loup is a charming medieval village that overlooks the beautiful Loup valley. The ancient ramparts and impressive castle are from a time when being able to shelter behind impregnable walls from marauding forces was a really big deal.

The historic Château des Comtes de Grasse, built between the 14th and 16th centuries, stands proudly with its grand rectangular building, three round towers, and an ornate wrought-iron gate flanked by two cannons. While it's been lovingly restored and converted into apartments, you can still admire its grandeur from the outside.

Right in front of the château, you'll find a statue of Admiral de Grasse. This is a special tribute to a local hero who played a pivotal role in the 18th-century American War of Independence, leading to the decisive victory at Yorktown. It's a connection that remains strong today, as Bar-sur-Loup is twinned with Yorktown!

Taking a stroll through Bar-sur-Loup is well worth the effort. The Marie and Town Council thoughtfully decreed the old town center should be pedestrian-friendly, allowing you to wander peacefully through its narrow, winding lanes free of looking the wrong way when you cross the road. You'll discover tall, historic houses huddled together, sloping or stepped pathways, and the charming Sarrasine gate. Don't miss the majestic fountain in the square, where you might spot a badge with the Grasse-Bar coat of arms.

If art rings your bell, make sure to visit the medieval church to admire an altarpiece by Louis Bréa, a renowned Renaissance master from Nice, as well as a fascinating "Danse Macabre" from the same period. For those who appreciate natural beauty, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the stunning Provençal countryside, dotted with olive groves, vineyards, roses, jasmine, and espaliered orange trees.

Feeling fit and adventurous? Take on the picturesque "Chemin du Paradis" (Path to Paradise), a scenic climb up the cliff to the "eagle's nest" village of Gourdon. Before you leave Bar-sur-Loup, be sure to savor the local orange wine, a specialty tipple that never seems the same when serve it at home. You'll also find variations and derivatives for sale like bitter orange jam and orange liqueur.
